It was a joy to celebrate 100 years of SKS with our South Kent family. This event marked the end of the School’s milestone Centennial, and we enjoyed sharing, and celebrating. Continue to connect with alumni directly on and access exclusive SKS content all year long.Ìý Photos from the weekend will become available two weeks following the event.Ìý In the meantime, please enjoy the highlights, videos, and presentations from the weekend below.
This year, the Hillside welcomed over 250 alumni to celebrate 100 years of SKS for Centennial Weekend 2024. Highlights from the weekend included the Annual Alumni Golf Tournament, a special performance and talk from Emmy Award-winning actor Gordon Clapp ’67, a strategic presentation and Q&A with Head of School Brian D. Sullivan, a panel discussion on coeducation and South Kent alumnae, a retirement tribute to Lawrence A. Smith ’73 as well as a 9th Head of School portrait unveiling, and speakers and stories from many generations across South Kent’s 100-year history. HEAD OF SCHOOL WELCOME
On Saturday, June 8, 10th Head of School Brian D. Sullivan welcomed everyone back to the Hillside with a presentation that envisions the next one hundred years for Âé¶¹Ö±²¥. A discussion followed about how our community can get more involved and help invest in and secure the School’sÌýfuture.Ìý
A CELEBRATION OF THE WOMEN OF SOUTH KENT
The Saturday morning program continued with a celebratory session honoring 100 Years of Women at South Kent. With introductions by Andy Ault ’74, the conversation was led by Kathleen Lindenmayer ’79, with participants Marge Smith, Polly Bartlett Bryson ’75, Anne Waller Auerbach, and Sydney Waller discussing the impact that women have had on campus over the years; from the incredibly supportive faculty spouses and energetic “faculty brats,†to the standout female employees who kept the School running, to the fourteen years of alumnae that graced the Hillside with their academic, athletic, and community-building talents. .
IN MY DAY: MEMORIES FROM REUNION CLASSES
For the next Saturday morning session, guests congregated to take part in the beloved tradition of ÌýMembers of the 50th reunion class (1974) led returning alumni in sharing memories from their time at Âé¶¹Ö±²¥, and as always, the stories were heartfelt, funny, and sentimental.
HILLSIDE PANEL DISCUSSION
The morning ended with a panel discussion led by Head of School Brian Sullivan and featuring other South Kent administrators and directors answering questions about what Âé¶¹Ö±²¥ looks like today and what plans we have for the upcoming academic year.Ìý
THE NANCY & JERRY WALLER MEMORIAL GARDEN DEDICATION
A highlight of Saturday afternoon was the special ceremony and dedication of The Nancy and Jerry Waller ’35 Memorial Garden. Anne Waller Auerbach and Sydney Waller shared fond memories of their family’s time at Âé¶¹Ö±²¥ and their hopes for the garden to be a place where future students and families can enjoy the outdoors and the School’s beautiful surroundings.
CENTENNIAL AWARDS DINNER & LAWRENCE SMITH CELEBRATION
The School hosted the culminating Centennial Dinner in Brown Gym. It was a beautiful reception filled with delicious drinks and fare, well-earned awards and tributes, and a wonderful community of people who helped us celebrate the end of South Kent’s first century.
During the ceremony portion of the evening,Ìý, the School paid tribute to members of our community and reunion classes.
Closing out the ceremony, the School honored Lawrence A. Smith ’73 as he officially retired as the 9th Head of School.
